Quick answer
When is the best time to visit Puerto Escondido in 2026? For dry, sunny weather, calmer seas and whale watching, go from November to April, the destination's high season. For big surf in Zicatela, lower prices and fewer people, go during the rainy season, from June to September. What is the weather like in Puerto Escondido, dry or rainy season?
Puerto Escondido has a tropical climate with two sharply defined seasons. The dry season runs from November to April: sunny days, low humidity, temperatures of 24 to 31 degrees Celsius and very little rain (Puerto-Escondido.mx). The rainy season runs from June to September, with downpours that usually fall in the afternoon or at night and leave the mornings clear; the vegetation turns deep green and prices drop. The destination's growth is not just a feeling: PXM airport handled 948,590 passengers in 2025 versus 850,142 in 2024, and from January to August 2025 it grew 10.58 percent with 664,510 passengers (Sectur Oaxaca / Wikipedia). The practical takeaway: booking ahead matters more and more.
When is the surf biggest and when is it best to surf?
The surf changes a lot with the season. The biggest-swell months line up with the south Pacific swells and the hurricane season, from May to October: that is when Playa Zicatela shows its power and draws surfers from all over the world. In the dry season, November to April, the sea tends to be calmer and sheltered beaches like Carrizalillo (a cove with 157 steps), Puerto Angelito and Manzanillo are better for swimming. One non-negotiable point: the Pacific has strong currents and the surf can change within minutes. Respect the warning flags, never swim alone and ask locals about the day's conditions.
What is the difference between high and low season?
High season centers on the December-January holidays, Holy Week (Semana Santa) and long weekends: more people, higher prices and lodging that sells out if you do not book ahead. The peak is real and measurable; during Holy Week 2026 Puerto Escondido received 72,193 visitors with 62.47 percent hotel occupancy (Diario Marca). Low season, mainly from May to November outside long weekends, offers a more local feel, better prices and nearly empty beaches. Another factor that boosted demand: the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway, opened on February 4, 2024, cut the Oaxaca City-Puerto Escondido trip from 6.5 to 2.5 hours (Expansion/Obras), bringing thousands of domestic travelers closer. Booking your vehicle ahead saves you the stress at the peaks.

Which vehicle is best to rent by season?
In the dry season almost anything works: a scooter to get around town, an ATV (quad) for dirt roads or a 4x4 jeep for long trips and groups. In the rainy season the dirt roads get muddy and puddled, so the 4x4 jeep is safer; if you stay on paved areas, the scooter is still handy. For ATVs and scooters we include helmets, which in Mexico are required by law for driver and passenger (the ATV counts as a motorcycle). It depends on your plan. From November to April there is dry weather, calmer seas, whales and a livelier tourist scene. From June to September it rains in the afternoons, but there is big surf in Zicatela, low prices and fewer people. There is no single best time, just the best one for you.
From June to September it rains almost daily, but almost always in the afternoon or at night. Mornings usually dawn clear and the rain rarely ruins the whole day. With a light raincoat and a dry bag you keep exploring between downpours without trouble.
The biggest surf arrives from May to October, with the south Pacific swells and the hurricane season; that is when Zicatela shows its power for advanced surfers. From November to April the sea is calmer, better for beginners and for swimming at sheltered beaches like Carrizalillo or Puerto Angelito.
From mid-December to March humpback whales pass along the Oaxaca coast, governed by NOM-131-SEMARNAT-2010. The practical peak is January and February. It is a seasonal sighting that is never guaranteed, but it coincides with the destination's best dry weather.
Yes. In December-January, Holy Week and long weekends demand rises; during Holy Week 2026 there were 72,193 visitors (Diario Marca). Vehicles sell out faster at those peaks, so booking ahead is wise. In low season there is more availability and flexibility.
