Quick answer

Does Puerto Escondido work for digital nomads in 2026? Yes. It is one of the best destinations on the Oaxaca coast for remote work: functional WiFi in the key areas, cafés that double as coworking (shared workspace with plugs and internet), an affordable cost of living and the beach five minutes away. KORU rents here, with a contract, an invoice and delivery where you are staying or at PXM airport; get a quote for your vehicle on WhatsApp.

What is the WiFi like in Puerto Escondido and which area should you stay in?

Connectivity has improved alongside the town's boom, though it is not uniform: choosing your lodging well remains the decision that best protects your productivity. That boom has numbers: the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway opened on February 4, 2024 and cut the trip from the city of Oaxaca from about 6.5 to 2.5 hours (SICT), and PXM airport handled 948,590 passengers in 2025 versus 850,142 in 2024 (Grupo Aeroportuario Turístico Mexicano). More people and more flights pushed the infrastructure, but real speed still varies by area.

Where can I find specialty coffee shops and coworking spaces?

The coffee scene spreads across three walkable areas: Rinconada, La Punta and Zicatela. La Punta has the highest density of specialty coffee shops and of vegan or plant-based options, with venues serving drip pour-over coffee, cold-brew coffee and single-origin coffee; current examples are Notto, Café Olé, Malagua (café and coworking) and Suku'un, though the offer changes over time. Many of those cafés also work as a shared workspace, with plugs and internet, reflecting how the town went from a surfing destination to a remote-work hub between 2020 and 2025 (Infobae). And there is a local bonus: much of the bean is Pluma-origin coffee, 100% arabica from the Sierra Sur, grown between 1,200 and 2,200 meters, with notes of chocolate, walnut and caramel. IMPI declared the 'Pluma' Denomination of Origin on February 4, 2020 for the benefit of some 28,000 coffee growers across 30 municipalities of the Costa and Sierra Sur, and Oaxaca is the fourth-largest coffee producer in the country, on the order of 66,000 tons (SIAP).

Before you book lodging

Ask the host for a recent speed test with a screenshot; if they cannot give you the figure, look elsewhere. Ask whether the internet is fiber optic or another type and whether there is a backup when the power goes out. Bring a type A or B plug adapter, a power bank to work from cafés and a local SIM card, which usually has better coverage on the coast. Keep a plan B: know a nearby café or coworking in case your connection fails on the day of an important meeting.

How much does it cost to live a month in Puerto Escondido as a digital nomad?

The nomad community is compact but active: unlike a big city, here you run into the same people at the coworking, the beach and the market, and connections form quickly. Some spaces host weekly meetups, surf lessons are the best social plan, and there are Facebook and WhatsApp groups like 'Digital Nomads Puerto Escondido' with up-to-date tips. On when to come: the dry season, October to April, brings better weather and more nomad life, while May to September has fewer people and afternoon rain. And note the scale of the phenomenon: Oaxaca topped 6,289,000 visitors in 2025 with an economic impact of 23,348 million pesos, and Puerto Escondido received 353,488 tourists from January to March 2026 with hotel occupancy of 53.42% (Sedetur). These are seasonal figures, not fixed, so in high season it pays to book lodging and vehicle early.

“Working by the sea sounds like a dream, but it stands on the basics: a good connection, a comfortable spot and freedom to move. That last part is where we come in.”
