In short
To watch mangroves and crocodiles near Puerto Escondido responsibly in 2026, always do it from the boat with a certified local guide, never feeding them or approaching on foot. With KORU RENT you reach La Ventanilla, Manialtepec or Chacahua on your own, at your own pace.
Why are there crocodiles in the mangroves and lagoons?
It is their home. The crocodile of the Oaxaca coast is the river or American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus), a native species listed as 'subject to special protection' under NOM-059-SEMARNAT; its populations collapsed from hunting in the 20th century and are recovering today inside Protected Natural Areas (CONANP, 2025). Lagunas de Chacahua National Park, decreed in 1937 and a Ramsar Site since 2008, spans more than 14,800 hectares and hosts Mexico's four mangrove species, crocodiles, turtles and birds (Sedetur Oaxaca).
What NOT to do so you can watch without putting yourself at risk?
Active official alert
On 18 December 2025, PROFEPA, CONANP and municipal authorities installed eight signs in Santa Maria Tonameca (Escobilla, Barra del Potrero, Guapinole and Ventanilla), near the Playa Escobilla Sanctuary, banning swimming, fishing and feeding crocodiles. Respect it.
Where and when to watch near Puerto Escondido?
Manialtepec Lagoon, about 15 km long and ~18 km west of Puerto Escondido (15-25 min by car), records more than 300 bird species and bioluminescence mainly in the rainy season, from May to November (Mexico Desconocido). La Ventanilla, ~1 hour south next to Mazunte, is a community ecotourism sanctuary: the 'Servicios Ecoturisticos La Ventanilla' cooperative was founded in 1998 and registered as a UMA in 2002 (El Universal Oaxaca). The best time to watch is early, between 7 and 9 AM.
Official safety protocol
Oaxaca Civil Protection runs 'SOS Cocodrilo' brigades of the Coastal Wetlands Network in Puerto Escondido, Chacahua and Santa Maria Tonameca. If you spot one, keep your distance and report to 911 or 089, or to the specialized network (954 113 5992). Their presence on beaches rose after Hurricane John in 2024.

In Manialtepec Lagoon (~18 km west, 15-25 min) and in the community mangrove of La Ventanilla (~1 hour south, next to Mazunte). Lagunas de Chacahua National Park, ~58-60 km via Federal Highway 200, also hosts crocodiles and the four mangrove species.

Keep your distance, do not feed it and warn others. Oaxaca Civil Protection runs SOS Cocodrilo brigades of the Coastal Wetlands Network; report to 911 or 089, or to the specialized network (954 113 5992). Their presence on beaches rose after Hurricane John in 2024.
It helps a lot, because these sanctuaries lie far from the main road and access to La Ventanilla includes about 1 km of dirt track. With a KORU RENT car or motorbike in Puerto Escondido you arrive at your own pace; for Chacahua add a boat crossing.
