Quick answer
Playa Balandra allows a maximum of 450 people per shift, in two time slots: 8:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00. Access requires a digital wristband with a QR code issued by CONANP. It is 25 to 27 kilometers from the La Paz malecón, about 30 minutes by vehicle. Beware of sites that are not from CONANP: there are resellers charging two to three times the official rate.
What is the capacity of Playa Balandra and how does the wristband work?
Balandra has been a Flora and Fauna Protection Area since the decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on November 30, 2012, and its Management Program was published on October 29, 2015. That status is what allows what makes it different from almost any other Mexican beach: it has a maximum capacity and access control.
The current scheme is 450 people per shift, with two daily shifts: one from 8:00 to 12:00 and another from 13:00 to 17:00. Entry requires a digital wristband with a QR code managed by CONANP. In practice this means Balandra is not a beach you can just show up to: you need to sort out access beforehand, especially during high season and on weekends.

How much does it cost to enter Playa Balandra in 2026?
This is where we need to be very explicit, because it's where most people overpay. The official rate reported by CONANP and local press is around 120 pesos per person; some sources distinguish between 120 pesos for foreigners and 60 for nationals. However, there are websites with domain names very similar to the official one that do not belong to CONANP and that sell access for between 11 and 16 dollars, that is, two or three times the real rate.
The practical recommendation is simple: before paying, verify that the site belongs to CONANP. An intermediary can be legitimate if it adds value, but paying triple for a wristband that the authority issues for 120 pesos is not a service, it is a markup.

How do you get to Playa Balandra from La Paz?
Rental prices published by La Paz operators; the Playa Bus is a local public service
Here's an honest tip that works against our own business: if Balandra is your only plan for the day, the Playa Bus at 60 or 80 pesos per person is unbeatable and renting a vehicle makes no sense. Renting is justified when you chain Balandra with Playa El Tecolote, the malecón, and a lookout point in the same day, or when you want to arrive before the shift opens.
Why does Balandra have a capacity limit and other beaches don't?
Because its ecosystem is especially fragile. Balandra is a cove of shallow, warm waters with mangroves, a type of environment that degrades quickly from foot traffic, chemical sunscreens, and engine noise. The capacity limit is not a bureaucratic nuisance: it is exactly what has allowed the beach to keep looking the way it looks.
Baja California Sur has other similar restrictions worth knowing if you're going to travel around the peninsula. In Cabo Pulmo National Park, the Management Program expressly prohibits motorized vehicle traffic within the federal maritime-terrestrial zone, the 20-meter strip adjacent to the beach. It's a rule cited verbatim, not a recommendation.
“Balandra is one of the few beaches in Mexico where the capacity limit is not a problem: it is the reason it's still worth going.”

What else to do in La Paz besides Balandra?
When is the best time to go to Balandra?
High season in Baja California Sur runs from December to April, which also coincides with the official gray whale watching window. In July and August the heat is extreme, and the morning shift, from 8:00 to 12:00, clearly becomes the best option: you arrive with the tide low, calmer water, and manageable temperatures.
A sign that the area is going to be busier: domestic flight searches to La Paz for summer 2026 grew 17% according to the Booking.com report on searches made between March and May 2026. With a fixed capacity of 450 people per shift, more demand simply means you need to plan further ahead.
Where KORU fits in
KORU RENT does not operate in Baja California Sur. Our base is in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, and we are preparing our arrival in Isla Holbox. We're publishing this guide because Balandra is Mexico's best example of a beach that works with clear rules, and because the reseller markup on its access is a real and avoidable problem. If this information saves you two hundred pesos and a line, the article did its job.

It's 25 to 27 kilometers from the malecón, about 30 minutes. The Playa Bus costs between 60 and 80 pesos per person, departs from 8:00 and returns every 45 minutes. With your own or a rented vehicle you have freedom of schedule, with scooters from about 40 dollars a day.
Yes, in practice: the digital wristband with QR code is mandatory and the capacity is limited to 450 people per shift, so during high season and weekends it's best to arrange it in advance.
Bringing pets, climbing the Hongo rock, using non-biodegradable sunscreen, and renting kayaks or paddleboards from independent providers within the area. These are rules from the Management Program of the protected natural area, not recommendations.
If Balandra is your only plan for the day, no: the Playa Bus at 60 or 80 pesos per person is cheaper. Renting is justified if you chain Balandra with Playa El Tecolote, the malecón, or other stops on the same day, or if you want to arrive right at the start of the shift.
The morning shift, from 8:00 to 12:00, especially in summer: there is less heat, the water is calmer, and with low tide you can better appreciate the shallow cove that makes the beach famous.
The official gray whale watching season runs from December 15 to April 30 in Baja California Sur, according to the notice published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on October 10, 2025. In Cabo San Lucas, from January 1 to April 30. La Paz is also one of three places in the country where you can swim with whale sharks.
A beach with rules is a beach that lasts
Balandra requires more planning than any other beach in this guide: capacity, shift, wristband, and rules of conduct. In exchange, it delivers something almost no famous beach in Mexico can still offer in 2026: clear water, few people, and an ecosystem that remains intact. All you have to do is arrive informed and not pay triple to an intermediary.
